I Swear
I Swear is a 120‑minute British biographical comedy‑drama that follows the real‑life journey of John Davidson, a Scottish man who was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at 15. The film, directed, written and produced by Kirk Jones, shows how John navigates the ups and downs of teenage life, the challenges of adulthood, and the kindness of strangers that help him discover his true purpose. It’s based on the 1989 documentary John’s Not Mad and brings to life the story that has inspired BBC documentaries and a BBC series.
The story is told with a mix of humor and heart. Robert Aramayo gives a knockout performance as John, and his portrayal earned him a BAFTA for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Peter Mullan, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and a debutante Scott Ellis Watson also add depth to the cast. Kirk Jones chose Aramayo without an audition, saying he knew the actor was right for the part from the start. Aramayo spent three months in Galashiels learning everything he could about John’s life, even doing Zoom calls with other people who have Tourette’s.
The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival and opened in the UK on 10 October 2025. It later reached the US, Latin America, Turkey, Portugal, Southeast Asia, South Korea and most of Eastern Europe on 24 April 2026, and became available on Netflix UK in March 2026. With a modest budget of $6 million, it has already earned over $13 million worldwide.
Critics have praised I Swear for its humane tone and the balance of earnestness and subtle humor. On Rotten Tomatoes, 98 % of 98 reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.0/10, and Metacritic gives it a score of 69/100. Variety called Aramayo’s turn “flawless,” while The Guardian described the film as “funny, fierce and full of heart.” The Financial Times noted its “serious and larky” approach, commending its tonal restraint.
If you enjoy biographical dramas that tackle real medical conditions with sensitivity, or if you’re looking for a story that mixes comedy with resilience, I Swear will likely hit the mark. Fans of strong character work and uplifting narratives will find plenty to appreciate. On the other hand, viewers who prefer pure comedy or pure drama without the emotional depth of a medical journey might find the film a bit heavy. Either way, it’s a compelling look at how kindness and perseverance can help someone turn a challenging condition into a source of purpose and inspiration.
